Teach Abroad in Bahrain

On the island nation of Bahrain, the Riffa Views International School (RVIS) contains its own little sea of multi-cultural students. This K–12 day school, now registered with Search Associates, is proud that its student population of 392 represents 37 nationalities! RVIS is relatively new, having opened in 2008 for Grades K–5 and expanded to include all grades in the following years. Its first senior class graduated last year, with a 100% pass rate for its seniors in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, and all graduates gained admission to quality universities in the U.S., Canada, U.K., and South Korea. In addition to the IB curriculum, RVIS provides a Reggio Emilia pedagogical approach for the early years. Forty percent of the students are Bahraini, and 21% are from North America and the U.K. The teaching staff of 55 includes eight from Bahrain and 36 from North America and the U.K.

The multinational student body enjoys a supportive learning environment with an exceptional technology infrastructure. Internationalism and service are key components of the school’s mission. In the past two years, RVIS students have been involved in service projects in India, Sri Lanka, and multiple projects in Bahrain. These and other learning opportunities ensure that RVIS students become ethically-guided contributors to a global society.

RVIS is accredited by the Council of International Schools and has been twice-honored to host regional conferences for the Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools, thanks in part to its purpose-built, state-of-the-art facilities. The school also boasts first-class tennis courts, artificial turf soccer pitches, and a 25-meter swimming pool. The spacious campus is housed within the gated community of Riffa Views Estates, which includes the only 18-hole grass golf course in Bahrain as well as a shopping area. Bahrain’s capital city of Manama is a 30-minute drive from the school. Bahrain is a small island, so the sea is always nearby, with the nearest beach only a 15-minute drive away.

RVIS is most interested in hiring singles and married teaching couples, but they will also consider married couples with a non-teaching spouse, for whom there are local employment opportunities. Teachers must be certificated and hold their academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. RVIS will also consider newly-certified teachers with outstanding personal qualities as well as those certificated in a non-English speaking country. A work visa may be obtained up to the age of 60 in Bahrain.

The salary and benefits package includes a modern, spacious, and fully-furnished villa adjacent to the school, a moving and settling-in allowance, and an annual stipend for airfare. Tuition is provided for two dependent children for teaching couples and for one child for single teachers. The school provides $1,000 per year for professional development and contributes 10% to a retirement plan. Worldwide health coverage, with the teacher paying a percentage, includes dental insurance; however, life insurance and long-term disability coverage are provided at no cost to employees. An added bonus: a Foreign Service Premium (FSP), which is 25% of a teacher’s base salary, is added to each of a teacher’s payment. Clearly, a RVIS contract offers the potential for savings.
