Overseas Teaching in a World-Class Environment in Guangzhou

Committed to "nurturing pillars of the world and pioneers of tomorrow," Singchin Academy, Guangzhou (SCA) is the first affiliate to Hwa Chong Family of Schools outside of Singapore, and the only member of this Family in China. SCA aims to cultivate bi-lingual and bi-cultural students through an international curriculum spanning primary and secondary school. Co-managed with Hwa Chong International School, Guangzhou SCA welcomed its founding students in the autumn of 2021. The school, which can accommodate 3,000 students and accepts students in the Greater Bay Area and from around the world. Boarding is available for those in Grades 9 through12.

SCA’s 70,000 square meter campus is located at China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City, Huangpu District. Its world-class educational environment boasts buildings designed by well-known architects from Singapore and a landscape created by the Guangzhou Design Institute. Facilities include natural turf, a first-class, standard football field, an athletics field, a heated indoor swimming pool, a music room, a theater, an art museum, a multi-purpose hall, a science laboratory, a learning centre, restaurants, gyms, cafes, and other facilities that can be found in top international schools.

Licensed by the Chinese Ministry of Education, SCA currently enrolls 430 K-12 students from China. The teaching staff of 43 includes 30 Chinese educators. In addition to the Chinese national curriculum, the school integrates the Singaporean curriculum and IB concepts into their program. SCA is a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and also offers A-Level courses.

Every student who enters SCA belongs to one of three houses: House of Virtue, House of Vision, and House of Valiant. In the house system, students are highly encouraged to establish common goals and pride, cooperate and forge ahead, participate in competitions and sports, cultivate self-confidence and self-esteem, learn from classmates or peers of different ages, set an example for younger fellows, take leadership roles, and learn to be inclusive and a team player.

Indispensable to the program at SCA are co-curricular activities (CCA) as they contribute to student development and a colorful campus experience. All activities are initiated by students, and the school provides wholehearted support to ensure students' learning outcomes. Students have the opportunity to get involved with the Student Union. Student Union, formed by free registration, elections, and voting in the houses, is an important bridge between the school’s administration and students.

SCA schedules free time—called i-Time—on a weekly basis, with the belief that it allows space for students to develop their own interests and thinking. During i-Time, students can choose to stay in the library or sports field, or they can make an appointment with a teacher or friend to chat or reflect. They may also engage in personal projects, or simply do nothing. The school says, “Leaving a blank space allows people to have time and opportunities to imagine and think, and ideals and hopes can be slowly cultivated.”

SCA can hire certified teachers of diverse profiles who are interested in teaching abroad, including couples with a non-teaching partner and newly-certified candidates. The school will also consider hiring interns. Teachers need not possess an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. As per country regulations, certified candidates up to the age of 57 may obtain a work visa.

The benefits package includes allowances for moving, monthly housing, and annual airfare. Tuition is covered for up to two children, and school meals are free. SCA provides professional development for IB, A Levels, and Singaporean Curricula. Local health insurance, including dental, is fully covered. The SCA package amounts to substantial savings or the chance for a family of four to live on one salary. There are local employment opportunities for non-teaching partners.
