Introducing Paul Johnson: Next Director at IS Latvia

On behalf of the Governing Council of the International School of Latvia (ISL) and the ISL Search Committee, Search Associates is pleased to announce that Mr. Paul Johnson has been appointed as new Director, beginning in August 2025. He explains why it is the perfect fit:

I was deeply impressed by the vibrant, community-focused atmosphere during my recent visit to ISL. Joining such a supportive, medium-sized school community, with a clearly articulated set of values and mission/vision statements, is particularly exciting to me. The school’s self-awareness and pride in its journey, as it plans for future developments, resonated strongly. ISL’s firm commitment to the International Baccalaureate (IB) philosophy and its dedication to nurturing globally minded learners align closely with both my goals and my professional experiences. I am eager to contribute to an environment that values holistic education and encourages critical thinking.

Paul Johnson’s most recent leadership position was Head of School at KIS International School in Bangkok, Thailand from 2019 to 2023. Prior to that, he served for 13 years as deputy head, secondary principal, or deputy principal in schools in New Delhi, India; Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam; and Shanghai, China. Paul recalls a favorite experience:

Among all the student-led projects and endeavors, such as MUN conferences, PYP Exhibitions, and sports tournaments, a student-made solar cookers project stands out from my science teaching days. Students not only explored sustainable technology but also developed personal resilience, engaging with local communities to demonstrate practical applications of what they learned. These types of projects underscore the innovative spirit and transformative connections that are wonderful to see students navigating.

Paul’s career in education began with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education at Central Michigan University, followed by a Master of Secondary School Education from the University of New Mexico and a Master of Educational Leadership at Lehigh University.

In his free time, Paul is an avid reader, from fiction and non-fiction to professional literature. He enjoys swimming and “exploring the great outdoors.” He and his wife Sepi love to travel, experience new cultures, taste different cuisines, and learn new languages. Throughout all their adventures, they enjoy the time spent with their three dogs, who often accompany them.

The Governing Council of the International School of Latvia, the ISL Search Committee, and Search Associates would like to thank all candidates who expressed interest in the Director position, and everyone who assisted and supported the successful search process.
