Commonwealth-Parkville School, Puerto Rico, Lights up the Sky!

Check out the Commonwealth-Parkville School (CPS) in Puerto Rico, new this year to Search Associates. The school’s motto, "Be a Comet…and Light up the Sky” is most appropriate; thanks to its rigorous college preparatory program, 100% of CPS’s graduates matriculate at four-year colleges!

Established in 1952, and accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) since 1962, CPS is split between two campuses: pre-K–Grade 6 at the Parkville Campus in Guaynabo and Grades 7–12 grade at the Commonwealth Campus in Hato Rey. In these two small and close-knit learning environments, students thrive both academically and socially. A student-teacher ratio of 8:1 and class sizes of fewer than 25 allows CPS to provide specialized instruction for students to succeed at every level.

The cornerstone of CPS’s curriculum is full immersion in English and a strong program in Spanish. The school describes itself as “dedicated to providing an ambitious and integrated curriculum, heavily influenced by technology . . . in a caring environment.” Its other offerings include the following: an award-winning science program; state-of-the-art facilities designed for learning 21st century skills; Horizons, a program for students with mild learning differences; athletics; and a systematic exploration of ethics and values, including service learning opportunities. High school students are offered A levels and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Currently enrolled are 709 pre-K–12 students, with 90% from Puerto Rico and 10% from North America. Of the 86 teaching staff, 81 are from Puerto Rico and four are from North America.

CPS is interested in hiring certified married and single teachers, with or without dependents, as well as interns. CPS requires candidates to hold an EU passport in addition to an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. The school will consider exceptional newly-certified teachers with limited experience, teachers certified in non-English speaking countries, and outstanding, experienced teachers without certification who are already in the country. While there is no age limit to apply for a work visa in Puerto Rico, teachers must be certified to obtain one.

The benefits package includes major medical insurance with local coverage, including prescription medications, dental and life insurance as well as long-term disability. A 50% tuition benefit is provided for teachers' children, and by law, the school must award all teachers a Christmas bonus of $600 (or more!). In place at the school is the Professional Development Program Title II-A. CPS also offers a retirement plan to which it contributes 2% of a teacher's gross salary.
